Vegan in Brussels. Where you need to go, What you need to know!

Voici la version plus récente de ce post et en français: Ici

Where you need to go

Wether you live here since decades or a new-in-town. Wether you have your home here or are just around for the week end. If you are vegan, vegeterian, or like to know where to find the ethical, animal and earth friendly places in Brussels, you are at the right place! I have listed for you all the best places for grocery shopping, eating out and other good-to-know things about the city, like vegan meet ups or even free cooking classes! As it is quit rare in Brussels to find 100% vegan places, I will indicate only when the place is indeed completely vegan. All the other places mentioned below are vegan friendly.

What you need to know

How to eat out ANYWHERE

You don’t get to decide where to eat, or you don’t want to ‘bother’ having you friends change their mind about the restaurant you are going to?

So here is how you can still eat vegan anywhere.

  1. you can call the restaurant in advance and tell them you are vegan and ask if the chef can prepare something special. It’s usually not a problem. if it is -> 3
  2. you couldn’t/didn’t call in advance, you can still ask the waiter once you read the menu. they’ll talk to the chef, it is rarely a problem to adapt a dish, or sometimes they even make a special dish for you.
  3. If it still is a problem, and you haven’t find anything vegan on the menu, ask them a salad or a plate of vegetable and fries/potatoes on the side. Ask the cook the veggies in oil not butter, and if the fries are cooked in vegetable oil not beef oil.
  4. In an Italian place, it’s the easiest, antipasti, bruschetta, marinated olives as starters, pasta (all arrabiata, with simple tomatoes, oil and basilicum, with veggies, marinated mushrooms, capers, you can often ask to add or remove an ingredient according to what you like best)  and pizza with veggies without the mozzarella,…
  5. In an Asian place, it get’s a touch trickier all though we all think they have so much vegan stuff, even what they call vegetarian is often not, they use fish and oyster oil pretty much in every dish. Some people are allergic to those, so if you don’t wanna make a fuss but still be safe, really insist on no fish-no oyster. The safe/adaptable dishes: coco based curries with tofu, rice and stir fried veggies, the spring rolls with tofu, the coco based soups with tofu, Vegetable steamed dumplings, Hot or cold sesame noodles, veggie chow mein or veggie fried rice, Salad with ginger or sesame dressing. it’s just all about asking without those 2 oils.
  6. At a Japanese place: Makis are adaptable for vegan, with cucumber and avocado, is a basic they all have, some places are really creative, with almonds, asparagus, mango,… the miso soup is safe and the ramen soup with no egg and tofu should be safe too.
  7. Middle east restaurants offer a lot of vegan options, the tabouleh, the hummus, the falafels, the cooked green leafs/salads, the grilled veggies, the bread…
  8. African restaurants offer quit some good options too, the peanut butter rice, the plantain bananas, ethiopian is the best regarding vegan food (they have some kind of pancake buckweat bread, to eat with various things)
  9. Mexican/latin american: it’s a little harder, but the guacamole and a lot of corn/ bean based dishes
  10. American: more and more places offer veggie burgers. again ask how they cook the fries, what is the bun made of and if the veggie pattie has no cheese and no egg. with ketchup please!
  11.  In a  sandwich place, you can ask a panini with grilled veggies and drizzled oil. Or some veggies, like dried tomatoes, artichokes, raw carrots, cucumber, onions, salad, if you are lucky they have avocado or olive/tomato tapenade or even hummus.
  12. In a kebab place, they almost always have falafel durum or pitta, with fries on the side, everything is fried in veggie oil, but I noticed in most place they deep fry the falafels in the same place as the meat. your call. the fries are cooked in an other place so those should be totally safe.
  13. those apps: manger veggie and happy cow
  14. last but not least, no be ashamed/embarrassed about asking and having them make a change for you. First you’d be surprise how allergic/intolerant/picky people are nowadays, and how restaurants are used to clients that are much more difficult to please then yourself. Second, you spend your money there, so you are the client. It’s not about being mean or not nice to the staff, but really if they can’t offer you one single vegan thing (pasta, veggies.. they should have at least that in the kitchen), then you can consider leaving. Third, if we speak up, and they realize there is a demand for vegan dishes, they will adapt the menu, you can be sure of that. There is a lot of competition between restaurants, they all want new or more clients. Don’t compromise or be ashamed of your values, we do it out of justice and compassion towards other beings, it’s only your right to live up to these values, whether they get it or not.

For decades, Europe’s buttoned-up political center had a reputation for stodginess and chilliness. No longer: Brussels has quietly emerged as one of the continent’s most exciting creative hubs.

  1. Hey Louise, loving the list!
I saw that Maiksu Sushi is missing, they have a vegan sushi option and you can assemble your own too.
Also U (Umamido) has one or two vegan rice dishes and Ramen with veggie stock.
    Keep the great work up,

  2. Hi Louise, thanks for all your info which will be perfect if I am able to stay for longer!! I am in Brussels for one night, staying in the Royal Best Western. Could you recommend a vegan friendly restaurant nearby? I am the only vegan in the party and it won’t be possible to encourage the colleagues to go far to eat with a tight schedule. We are apparently next to the Comptoir Royal but their menu is in French and doesn’t look promising plus they don’t reply to emails. Any advice is helpful! Kind regards, Julie.
